Ahhhhhhhh, the alarm is ringing and you don’t feel like getting up. Maybe splashing some fresh ice water across your face will get you going…or maybe drinking it will. Really?
A Morning Energizer Worth Trying…
In his book, Your Body’s Many Cries for Water”, Dr. F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., a pioneer in the study of water, says drinking water is a ‘pick-me-up’ that can make you alert within three to four minutes of hydrating. If you don’t feel like getting out of bed after waking up, it’s likely because you’ve lost fluids through respiration over the past eight hours that haven’t been replaced. In other words, you’re probably dehydrated. Try waking up your body with a cool glass of water! Or put a bottle of water next to your bed at night so it’s there to grab when you wake up in the morning.
…And There’s More
There are other benefits to drinking water in the morning.
Encourages Good Hydration Habits
Water is a nutrient essential for life. Hydrating throughout the day is a great routine to adopt for your health and well-being, and drinking first thing in the morning gets you off to a great start.
Reduces Stomach Acidity
Heartburn is a burning sensation that happens when stomach acid travels up to the esophagus rather than staying in the stomach where it belongs. Without the benefit of food to dilute the acid, heartburn is more likely in the morning hours. Certain liquids, can provide relief – and as you probably guessed – a simple glass of water is one of them. Drinking water shortly after you awaken can reduce the level of acidity in your stomach and help relieve the symptoms of heartburn.
Helps Keep You Regular
Proper hydration helps our bodies run smoothly and helps prevent constipation. Research has found that drinking it in the morning might help stimulate bowel movements. When your stomach senses liquids or food, your body sends signals to your intestines to evacuate, increasing the likelihood of a bowel movement. Because water is nutritional and calorie-free, it is a good choice to achieve this result.
Try Waking up to the Benefits of Water
Over time, I’ve become an avid morning water drinker. Admittedly, I still have a Starbucks every morning (half-caf working towards de-caf), but only after drinking a glass of cold water first thing and a full mug of hot water on my way to work.
Give this a try and please let us know if you feel a difference. Comments are welcome!
